This can be a frustrating experience for both the mother and baby. Fortunately, if lip or tongue-tie is the issue, there are a couple of minor procedures that could offer an easy solution and allow you to successfully nurse your baby. Frenectomies and frenotomies can both make a huge difference. Here’s what you should know about each.

When Does Lip or Tongue-Tie Need to Be Treated?

Every child is born with a tiny piece of tissue called a frenulum underneath their tongue and upper lip. For the majority of babies, this tissue disappears before they are born, and it causes no issues. However, occasionally, babies have this tissue after they are born. While this tissue doesn’t usually cause any issues, sometimes it can be too thick and make it more difficult for the baby to create the necessary suction while breastfeeding. This can lead to the baby attempting to bite and not getting the milk they need.

How Do Frenectomies and Frenotomies Work?

Frenectomies and frenotomies are very similar, but they have one main difference. A frenectomy removes the frenulum completely while a frenotomy results in a sill amount of the frenulum being preserved. With both procedures, the child should experience an improved range of motion and function.

Which Procedure Does Your Baby Need?

Frenectomies and frenotomies are both ways to resolve a lip or tongue tie. Before either of these is completed, a consultation is necessary to determine which procedure, if any, is necessary for them. During the consultation, the dentist can address any questions or concerns that you have.

In the past, frenectomies and frenotomies were performed using surgical scissors and a scalpel. Today, soft tissue lasers are available to complete the procedure, and they result in reduced bleeding and discomfort, making the entire process quicker and easier.

Whether a frenectomy or a frenotomy is the best option for your child, they are both great ways to give babies more mobility with their mouths. This way, you can work towards a more successful nursing experience. If you think your child may have a lip or tongue-tie, there are solutions out there!

About the Practice

At Texas Dentistry & Braces, we have a team of seven skilled dentists serving the Mesquite community.
