What Are the Different Types of Tooth Pain? Let Us Explain

Man has tooth pain

Toothaches hurt, but different toothaches can hurt differently. One toothache might be sharp and throbbing while another one might be dull and aching. It might only be noticeable while eating or suddenly become unbearable just before you go to bed. A toothache can strike anywhere at any time, and while it can sometimes be resolved by brushing and flossing, other times it can require the attention of an emergency dentist. Here’s a brief breakdown of the different ways a toothache can hurt to help you determine what kind of toothache you have.

Dull and Lingering

A dull but persistent discomfort in the teeth is the most common type of toothache. Luckily, this sort of pain is usually the simplest type to treat. It is usually caused by teeth grinding or something stuck in the gums or between the teeth. In the case of teeth grinding, you can buy a mouthguard to wear at night that will protect your teeth from this unfortunate reflex. If it is caused by debris stuck in the gums or teeth, thoroughly brushing and flossing can usually remove the offending particles.

In some cases, it can be caused by an abscessed tooth. This sort of bacterial infection can result in a swollen bulb in the gums and requires an emergency dentist’s attention for treatment.

Sporadic Sensitivity

Do you experience momentary discomfort in your teeth during chewing or in response to hot or cold foods or beverages? This issue usually results from the enamel having been worn thin. You might try using desensitizing toothpaste or avoiding the consumption of hot or cold items to see if the problem goes away.

In other cases, the problem could be caused by more egregious dental damage such as cracks, worn fillings, exposed roots, tooth decay, or gum disease. If you experience intense pain that doesn’t go away after thirty seconds when chewing or drinking, contact your dentist immediately.

Sharp and Stabbing

A compromised restoration such as a loose filling or ill-fitting crown can cause jabbing pain. It can also be caused by fracture, decay, or wear of the natural teeth. If you are experiencing this sort of discomfort, your dentist will be able to identify its source and have you back to smiling and chewing normally in no time.

Severe and Throbbing

If a toothache becomes intolerable or unignorable, you should see an emergency dentist as soon as possible. This could be the result of severe tooth decay that can spread to other teeth or even lead to dangerous secondary infections like sepsis. Your dentist may set you up with antibiotics and pain relievers and schedule you for treatment later in some cases, but other times they may need to promptly get to work on dealing with the problem.

An emergency dentist is well-equipped to figure out what is causing a toothache. They will perform a thorough exam that may include using X-rays to determine the most effective remedy, allowing them to get the patient back to normal as soon as possible.
