Interproximal Reduction – How Does It Work?

If you’re eager to achieve a straighter smile without showing off a mouthful of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign is likely a great option for you. However, for some patients, the dentist may recommend an interproximal reduction before beginning the treatment process. Continue reading to learn what interproximal reduction is, what to expect, and how this can improve your smile.

How Does Interproximal Reduction Work?

Interproximal reduction is when a dentist mechanically removes enamel from between the teeth. This is usually done before or during orthodontic treatments to correct crowning or reshape the area between teeth that are close together. Ultimately, this reduces the size of the teeth to create more area between them so they can be positioned together better.

This procedure is very conservative and only takes away a tiny portion of the tooth’s structure to allow for more movement of the teeth during the orthodontic treatment. The gaps that are left behind are only temporary, as Invisalign clear aligners are used to slowly shift the teeth to be the perfect distance apart.

Does Interproximal Reduction Hurt the Teeth?

Interproximal reduction is a relatively painless procedure. Occasionally, patients may experience some minor increased sensitivity to temperatures, but this is uncommon because the outer layer of the tooth doesn’t have any nerve endings.  This procedure only removes a small amount of the tooth structure, so the affected teeth will still have plenty of enamel to stay strong and healthy. This way, your teeth will not become more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, or any other dental issues.

What Are the Benefits of Interproximal Reduction?

This procedure allows patients to keep their entire set of healthy teeth and avoid tooth extraction. It can also help to avoid those black triangles of space that can form between the teeth and collect food debris, plaque, and bacteria. These spaces increase your risk of gum disease and tooth decay. The teeth are also able to be shifted closer together without overcrowding, making it more cosmetically appealing.

How Will My Dentist Decide If I Need Interproximal Reduction?

To determine if this step is right for you, your dentist will consider the size and shape of your teeth, their positions and alignment, as well as your facial features. Throughout this evaluation, they will determine whether it will benefit your bite and the appearance of your smile.

If your dentist recommends interproximal reduction, you have nothing to worry about. This routine procedure will help you show off a perfectly aligned, beautiful smile in no time!
