Is Your Smile Hurting Your Love Life?

If you’re on the dating circuit, you’ve probably started to focus on what could turn off potential partners. Maybe you’ve begun to change out your wardrobe. On the other hand, you might be learning a different body language. However, have you considered your smile in this process? Fifty-eight percent of men and seventy-one percent of women listed healthy teeth as a “must-have” in a survey of over 5,000 people.

The link between dating and dental health is a strong one. Read on to learn more about its origins, its impact, and how to take it into account in your love life.

It’s Our Biology

Some have speculated that dental health could signal your relative fitness as a partner to other people. One survey researcher said the following: “From a Darwinian perspective, good teeth are a real indication of your health — how much you drink, smoke, what you’re eating.” In that sense, the intuitive approval of good teeth stems from the impulse to have a physically healthy spouse.

The Data is in — Great Smiles are Desirable

In a Delta Dental survey, nearly eighty percent of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers agreed that good smile care is attractive. A DentaVox study showed that sixty-eight percent of respondents stopped dating someone because the other person had terrible teeth. Many others cite lousy breath or yellow/crooked teeth as their biggest dating no-no.

Still, bad breath may be the most common dating deal-breaker. Fifty-seven percent of the DentaVox survey respondents stopped dating a partner because of it. A review conducted by the Oral Health Foundation in the UK found eighty-five percent of answerers wouldn’t go on a second date with someone who had a smelly mouth.

So, What Should You Do?

Thankfully, poor teeth and breath are things that can be fixed. Consider trying out these tips:

  • Practice a regular oral care routine: As you always should, brush twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste and floss once daily. To freshen your breath, rinse with a dentist-approved mouthwash.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleaning: See a dentist every six months to have them clean your mouth of bacteria, plaque, and other harmful materials. The result should make your smile shine brighter and your breath smell better!
  • Consider professional teethwhitening: If necessary, you could always have your dentist bleach your smile white. Using ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, they could remove stubborn tooth stains from your enamel in a single, short appointment.

While you can’t make love a certainty, a beautiful smile wouldn’t hurt your chances. Remember the connection between good teeth and dating so you’re more likely to find a match!
